Question: What's the best way to market a yard sale?

Question Description:
I'm starting school in January and I have some things that I want to sale. A desktop computer(paid $500) and a Proform treadmill(paid $600). Also a couple of televisions, manga, storage containers, DVDs, and stools. What is the best way to market these things. I really just want to sell the treadmill. How much is a reasonable price to sale it for? Come January, it will be a year old. I was thinking of making flyers and posting them around or either putting it in the paper. I live in a small, but growing, town so I don't know if they will bite.

Answer#1: Yes Flyer's, Your local paper is the best way to go! My sister lives in a small town and loves to go to garage sales on the weekend and if people are the type to go to garage sales then yes they will come if not they don't.

Answer#2: USUALLY SOME ARTICLE WILL BE SOLD IF IN GOOD SHAPE,CLEAN,POSITIONED AS A MAJOR ITEM,NOT WITH MORE THAN ONE OTHER MAJOR AS A DISPLAY IN ORDER TO GET GOOD ON SITE COVERAGE & SOLD FOR 1/2 PRICE WITH A SIGN STATING ORIGINAL COST AS WELL(INCLUDE ANY TAX OR DELIVERY CHGS.) BESIDES NEWSPAPER ,MAKE UP AT LEAST 100 HANDBILLS PUT ON ALL ENTRY DOOR KNOBS OF NEIGHBORS...PLAY PLEASING MUSIC LOW IN VOLUME FOR BACKGROUND CONDUCIVE TO BUYING(ELEVATOR MUSIC)....SMILE & GREET ALL PEOPLE COMING TO YOUR SITE...COME UP TO SOME SAYING "IS THERE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR YOU ARE LOOKING FOR,I'LL BE GLAD TO HELP YOU....ALSO EXPLAIN IN YOUR BILLS WHY YOU ARE HAVING THIS SALE & PUT UP A WELL MADE SIGN EXPLAINING SAME---EVERYBODY'S CONCERNED ABOUT A GOOD CHOICE LIKE FURTHERING YOUR EDUCATION--MORE WILL BUY FOR A GOOD REASON,DON'T BE TIMID AND DON'T BE A SILENT STRANGER...

Answer#3: You could just post it in the paper and maybe do a few flyers. However, if you do the flyers then I would suggest you try all the coffee shops, cafes and maybe bars. I don’t know, whatever you have there that will allow you to put up a flyer. Lots of coffee shops have bulletin boards just for flyers and business cards. Also, (just a little FYI) I would suggest that you NOT put them on cars. I don’t know about you, but that would be the first thing I threw in the trash.Anyway, If you’re doing a yard sale then always put an advertisement in the paper. You will get many customers in the early morning hours when you do this. Most times I've had a yard sale, I'm practically finished by 5 pm the first day because people will come early for a deal and a special find. I have had several Antique Dealers stop by in the past just for that reason. Also, put a few signs up the night before or the morning of with the address, date, time, and an arrow showing the way. It's best to use poster-board of a light color with one maybe two contrasting colors for the writing. If you are allowed, you can use a staple-gun to attach them to posts or just get a few 2x4s and attach the signs to them, then stickem in the ground. Make sure you get permission from any home/business owners to put in or near their yard.I usually have two yard sales a year because that’s how many your allotted without a permit in our area. In addition, I sell a lot of my artwork that hasn’t sold for that year at the yard sale.I have a neighbor that does crafts and makes lovely handmade dolls. She and her husband have been doing the same thing with the yard sale for years. People from all over look forward to them and I must admit that that’s actually how I got the idea.Good luck!

Answer#4: Putting up signs in all the right places in the neighborhood, i.e. intersections, should help. But you must set it up nicely so that those "cruising" for yard sales in their vehicles won't just keep on driving past your sale.Good Luck.

Answer#5: You could put it on Craigs list for sale- Is there a local thrifty nickel or quick quarter paper that people sell stuff in?? or a consignment store?? or on a college or school bulletin board- or a supermarket w a community board?? or put an ad in the local and the next largest town closest to you- good selling! D

Answer#6: Making flyers/sign and putting a classified ad in the paper usually works. I would say try putting up an ad on Craigslist, but you live in a small town. It doesn't hurt to try though. Good luck.
