Question: How accurate are the calorie counters on treadmills and cardio equipment?

Question Description:
Any ideas on how accurate the counters are on treadmills and other cardio equipment at the gym? My gym uses Precor equipment and I always wonder how close the display is to the actual calories I'm burning. Obviously it's probably a little closer if you put in your age and weight, but what about basic muscle mass and body composition?

Answer#1: Those exercise equipment in the gym is very accurate, just like the weight scale and the basic muscle mass and body composition needs a nurse to compose.

Answer#2: They have no basis in accuracy at all. The equipment manufacturers put them on there because they know that the average gym-goer obsesses over how many calories they burn while they are on their machine. And, of course, they are obsessing over numbers that are complete fiction.Dave S.Owner, Perfect Fit Personal Training Studiohttp://www.thetruthaboutdiets.com

Answer#3: They are totally just a toy added feature with no accuracy. They assume everyone burns energy at the same rate which isn't right. It comes down to your own individual bodies chemical composition and reactions. Do your exercise everyday and use digital scales to keep an approximate record. And obviously eat a balanced diet.
