Lower speed + higher inclines more resistance = More weight lossHigher speed + lower incline not some much resistance +not so much weight loss. Is what I am saying rubbish or not quite rubbish? Please say. Sports science interests me know end these days and would be interested in doing s short course in it. Is it a degree course or can you do a home study course do you know? Answer#1: Nettie; Your on the right track (pun intended), To answer your first questions weight loss on a treadmill is not just a function of low speed and incline resistance vs, higher speed and lower incline, but also of time. first of all in comparing the 2 factors if your cardiac output (measured by heart rate) is the same then your caloric burn rate will be the same. You can measure this by taking your pulse on your wrist for 6 seconds and then multiplying it by 10. That number will be your pulse rate for 1 minute. Then take your age and subtract it from 220. That number would be the figure approximating your maximum heart rate, To attain ideal weight loss you would want to keep your heart in the range of about 70% to 75% of that number for about 50 minutes 5 times per week.So lets say your 15 years old. Take 15 subtract it from 220 which would equal 205. Take 70% of 205 and this would be 143 beats per minute. So when you would take your pulse you would want it to be 14 in 6 seconds. At that rate you can sustain long periods of work (exercise) without blowing up. To answer the second part of your question, you will learn these dynamics studying sports medicine or exercise physiology through a University or college you will hopefully attend.
