Question: Does the eliptical machine really give you a good workout?

Question Description:
i break a sweat, but whenever i use it i feel like it is so much easier than running, but maybe that is just because it is very low impact. also, the calorie counters on eliptical machine are VERY off. have any of you succesfully lost weight using mainly the eliptical machine?(i use it with the moving arm things at a decent speed and resistance)

Answer#1: yes it help me but you also have to do stregthing exercising like weight lifting along to build muscle, muscles burn fast faster,

Answer#2: Running is the best cardiovascular exercise you can do. However the elliptic trainer will get your heart pumping without the impact on your knees.

Answer#3: This is a good question because I also use this machine at the gym. From what I have read, the eliptical macine is only effective at counting calories when used on the higher resistance settings. That may be the reason you find it so easy to use. I usually set it to 14 and do that for 400 calories. Then move on to the tread mill for another 400 and/or the stepper machine. I find that in order to get a good workout, multiple machines should be used othrwise your body will get used to that one machine and not be as effective for targeting all muscles in your body. Heres a litle fun fact...in order to "burn" a pound of fat, you have to burn a little over 3000 calories. Have fun at the gym and you will have a great workout.

Answer#4: Yes, it gives you a great workout. If you find that it is too "easy" then increase the resistance. "Low impact" does not refer to how easy or hard it is; it refers to how hard of impact it has on your joints and bones. It is low impact because you are not slamming down your feet, as you would in running. If you want to successfully lose weight, it is not just a matter of the number of calories that you burn (and I'm curious as to why you think the calorie counter is off). Losing weight is more affected by your metablolism than simply the fact that you exercise. Lifting weights can burn calories, but if you haven't reached your target heart rate (the rate that qualifies the exercise to be an aerobic exercise) then it will not affect your metabolism. It is advised to exercise at least three times per week at an aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes per session to affect your metabollism. This will allow your body to burn the calories you do consume more efficiently.

Answer#5: A lot of girls with eating disorders love them. That sounds weird but yeah...that's the only source I have on that.
