Question: Adding strength training to a workout routine?

Question Description:
I recently started running 5 days a week for about an hour. I want to incorporate strength training next. Should I do upper body one day and lower another or a full body strength training routine 3 days a week? Or is this overload? Any (helpful and serious) advice will be appreciated.

Answer#1: I would suggest splitting the upper and lower body days. This will give your body time to rest the muscles.Try to focus on compound exercises that use several muscle groups at once.If you have weights, you can try the workout below. It is designed for both strength (on the max effort days) and muscle mass (for the repetition day). For strength, focus on the max effort day routines. Thought the max rep day may not be a bad idea for you to do as well.http://www.defrancostraining.com/articles/archive/articles_westside.htm

Answer#2: Since you are just starting out, you may want to start off slowly. Try doing upper body one day and then lower body another day. Eventually, over time you can do a full body strength routine. Here is a link that may give you more insight:http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwfit/strength.htmlGood luck with your workout and strength training. Keep up the good work!
