Question: strength training for kids?
Question Description:
Hi, I would like to get a list of pros and cons with regards to strength training for kids. thank you
Answer#1: Pros: 1. Helps prevent them from becoming obese2. Gets them involved in some form of fitness activity early in life3. Could be a bonding time if parent coaches4. Could give the kid a sense of "specialness," because not many kids do this.Cons:1. Serious risk of skeletal injury--developing bones can't take overdevelopment/strain of muscle tissue2. Who really wants this? Is the parent trying to live through the kid?3. Strength training is not a very social activity; kid would be better served there by joining Little League, soccer team, etc. 4. Many bodybuilders have very funky, unhealthy diets. If that would be part of it, it wouldn't be good for your kid.
Answer#2: I only know that when I worked at the YMCA they didn't recommend it until age 8 and then it was on special resistant machines designed for their size. The other thing that comes to mind was something about the possibility of their growth being affected if weight training was over done. I think its great to encourge exercise for your kids and explain all of the health benefits and that it isn't just about looking good.
