Question: Is the calorie counter on a stair stepping machine accurate?
Question Description:
It's new. I was wondering how accurate it was if I want to count how many calories I have burned after each use.
Answer#1: They probably aren't all that bad. I've compared the realitive effort of the stairmaster against an effort of running one mile and find that 8 minutes on the stairmaster is about the equivalent of 1 mile running (140 calories at my weight of 190 pound), so it is not very far off.
Answer#2: Most calorie counters will give you a guideline -- how many calories the "average" or "ideal" person will burn doing a given activity. The more variables your particular machine allows you to input, such as weight, height, gender, etc., the more accurate it will be.
Answer#3: Generally speaking, the calorie counters that come with these machines in most gyms aren't all that accurate. Calculating the precise amount of calories you burn is complex and varies from person to person. For the most part, they tend to overestimate the amount of calories you're actually burning. So, look at them as a good rough guide, but nothing accurate.Think of it this way: if you work out for 30 to 45min or so with a decent level of intensity such that your heart rate is really crankin', then you've done well. Focus on the big picture, and don't get too hung up on calorie burning numbers.
