Question: Started lifting, but how can I start to gain weight?

Question Description:
I started lifting about 8 months ago and am starting to get in shape, but I haven't seen much muscle gain. I've tried to eat more protein, but I haven't taken any supplements yet. I'm 22, 5' 11" and weight about 165 now. What could I do to see some bigger gains in muscle mass and make my abs start to show (they're there but they're right under a small layer of fat)? My current work out schedule:Cardio (eliptical or step machine) 3 or 4 days a weekLift (Nautilus machines) 2 days a weekCrunches/Abs 2 days a weekI usually rest one day a week and sometimes do more than one of the above in a given day/workout.

Answer#1: if you want put on size you have to give up the abs for a bit. you have a fast metabolism . if you want size you need too eat whenever your hungry and not just the good carbs and proteins.and you need to lift. i mean lift not just machines and 5 to 6 days a week. use free weights. it takes some dedication to grow. i go 5 days a week.back is day 1 chest 2 legs 3 arms 4 shoulders 5.

Answer#2: If you want to gain weight / muscle mass, cut back on the cardio to 3 days a week, 30 mins. each day. Increase your lifting schedule to 3-4 times a week (all muscle groups) Use a combination of Nautilus and free weights, heavier weight, less reps. Just keep in mind, cut back on the cardio for the next 12 weeks. Eat at least 3,000 calories a day!

Answer#3: You definatly need to change your routine. Try to lift 5 days a week and do cardio 2 to 3 days a week. You could do a split routine were you work 2 different body parts each day or do what I do and hit each body part once a week. Chest, back, shoulders, legs, arms, each done on a seperate day. Also try taking protien shakes atleast 3 times a day, and you could also try creatine.

Answer#4: I do a Whey protein shake in the a.m. and afternoonWalmart brand ($12.97) Chocolate Whey Protein, 1 banana, 1 tsp pnut butter, 1 cup skim milk, 1 cup ice, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 2 packet of splendaBlend and drink! You can also add some L-Glutamine powder to that also!check at www.bodybuilders.com

Answer#5: Most of us are trying hard to lose weight, and there you are trying to gain weight. Lucky, lucky you!
